A Cuban link chain is a family of interlocking-link designs, not one fixed specification. Two chains can share the same nominal width and still look, feel and move differently because the links have different profiles, spacing, orientation and connection geometry. Buyers can make comparisons clearer by naming these visible and measurable features instead of relying on a broad style label.
Begin with the link profile
Profile describes the shape seen across and through a link. A link may appear rounded, flat, beveled, faceted or domed. Record the top view, side view and approximate thickness because front-facing photography can hide depth. Edge treatment also matters: a highly beveled edge reflects light differently from a broad flat surface, while a rounded profile can create a softer outline.
Record pitch and visible gap
Pitch is the repeating distance from one similar point on a link to the same point on the next link. It helps describe how dense or open the pattern looks. The visible gap is the open space between neighboring links when the chain lies naturally. Neither value should be estimated from an enlarged catalog image. Photograph a labeled sample beside a scale and state the measurement method.
A tighter visual pattern is not automatically better. Space between links affects articulation, finish exposure and how easily the chain can be cleaned. The right pattern depends on the intended appearance and construction.
Check link orientation and alignment
Cuban-style links are commonly twisted or oriented so the repeating surface can lie relatively flat. Inspect whether neighboring links settle into a consistent plane. Small movement is normal, but recurring raised links, uneven rotation or a section that will not lie naturally can indicate an assembly or alignment issue that should be compared with the approved reference.
Evaluate articulation and drape
Articulation is the movement available between links. Drape is the way the complete chain hangs under its own weight. Test both on the actual selected length. Lay the chain flat without pulling it, lift it from several points and place it on the intended display form. Record any section that feels unusually rigid, catches or creates a sharp kink.
A heavy-looking chain can still articulate smoothly, while a lighter chain can feel stiff because of its link geometry or decorative setting. Weight alone does not predict movement.
Include the transition into the clasp
The terminal links, connector and clasp are part of the chain anatomy. Note how the repeating pattern narrows or changes near the closure, whether the last link moves freely and whether the clasp clears the adjacent links. A front-only image can make a closure transition invisible, so include back and side photographs in the product record.
